SO GUATEMALAN!!!

Back when I lived in Milan one day I went to school wearing a white shirt sort of Mexican looking (you know which one's I'm talking about) with big colorful flowers embroidered (YES, I know!!! Don't act like you haven't done it!!!). When I got there I bumped into my dear friend Emmanuelle, who instantly saw me and before she even said hi to me she said: YOU LOOK SOOOO...GUATEMALAN!!! It stuck with me forever. So today while I was thinking how to name this post I of course remembered Manu's very spontaneous salute. Some thing's you never forget.

So here's my YOU LOOK SO GUATEMALAN OUTFIT. Today we filmed a special edition of our morning show Matutino Express commemorating our independence day and for it I decided to wear my newly acquired güipil (güipil is an indian native blouse or dress) from Santiago Atitlán. It's actually vintage and a collectors piece. I love it!!!

The headpiece is also native but it's not from Santiago Atitlán. I'm embarrassed to admit I don't remember it's native region, sorry. Since the dress is actually very loose and boxy I decided to cinch my waist with my favorite Kenzo braided leather belt that I've had for  almost 10 years, seriously I think I bought that belt at Kenzo in Milan in 2002. I plan on wearing it for another 10 years, if not more.

SUNDAY MORNING

I used to have this mirror on top of my secretaire. A couple of days ago, I came home to find my mirror on the floor. It had fallen down!!! Thank god the frame is very thick and strong and nothing happened to it. However I found myself forced to relocate the mirror, and since I still don't know where exactly to put it, I decided to just leave it on top of my chair while I think of a better place. This morning I woke up and first thing I saw was this image. I thought to myself: this would make a wonderful picture. Needless to say I took a picture.

Now, Im off to the gym!!!

SUNDRESS & HATS

Good morning earthlings!!! Today it seems like it's going to be hot and wet, YES!!! lots of hot weather and rain, isn't that nice. This is exactly why the other day I decided to buy myself a cute little sundress at MNG. It's fresh and it's feminine and veeeeery comfortable. Probably you're thinking: BUT IT'S RAINY SEASON!!! yes but that doesn't mean I can't wear short day dresses, I just need to put on a pair of boots I can get wet and off we go. This is the type of dress that when the winter comes (in Guatemala this translates to relatively cold weather) I'll be wearing it with brown tights, leather boots a hat and a chunky grandpa cardigan.

In this pictures I'm not wearing boots because yesterday we had to film some images for DE LOS 20 A LOS 50 http://www.facebook.com/pages/DE-LOS-20-a-LOS-50/168354836015, the women's talk show I'm part of, but when It was time to leave the house I decided to wear my brown leather boots and brown hat (Oh and of course my umbrella). Thank God I did because it got really wet outside and I would've completely ruined my shoes.

Have a glorious day everyone!!!

THE RISE OF THE CREATIVE CLASS

Today I started reading the best seller book "The Rise Of The Creative Class" by Richard Florida. This is actually the second time I read the book. I read it for the first time in 2009 but with all this creativity going around I felt the need to read it again and refresh my memory.

The paragraph that captured my attention the most while reading today was the following:

"Relegating vast numbers of people to do rote work is a dreadful waste of human capabilities. For the creative age, it is both morally and economically inefficient. The real need is to bring more people into creative work, to create more markets and opportunities to tap the creative capabilities of far greater numbers of people."

Dear friends, today I want to encourage you to explore your creative side. Creativity is not only for musicians, artists, and cinematographers, it's also for scientists and engineers, all of those in charge of creating new things. God gave us all the capability to be creative, believe or not you too have it in you.

So, why am I talking about "The Rise Of The Creative Class" because while planning to write this next post I thought it would be the perfect title for it. My mother and I are trying to polish up our apartment a little bit because where having some guests coming from Spain next week. Ever since we moved here a year and a half ago after my father past away we haven't really done anything great to it, we kind of didn't care that much. Now we're starting to care a little bit more. I was looking around our place trying to find interesting things to use and I came upon this painting I did two years ago, just before I went on a perennial artistic strike (I think it was actually my last painting). Since now I'm finally more in touch with my creative side and determined to explore all my artistic talents, I decided to take it out of the closet, dust it off and take it to get it framed so we can hang it on our living room wall. Who cares if people like it or not, my mom seems to love it (of course she's my #1 fan).

This painting is quite big, I don't remember it's measurements but it's big, which makes it perfect for our living room wall that's completely EMPTY. I guess it's finally time for new beginnings. Let's see where all this takes us. I'll keep you posted.

I told you it was big, It's like the size of a regular bed.

GOOD BY KATE!!!

Ok guys, nothing lasts forever!!! This goes for my KATE MIDDLETON LOOK BOOK. It's time to say: good by Kate. There's just too much Kate Middleton going around and right now I'm trying to re-invent STYLE BY RED, I need to give it it's own genuine identity. I know she's fabulous, I know everyone loves her but to tell you the truth I've never quite identified with her. Everything in this blog should be a reflection of myself. Soooo this is the last image of Kate you'll ever see on STYLE BY RED. If you want to keep track of here daily looks I recommend that you visit New York Magazine's Kate Middleton Look Book, you'll find everything you're looking for there:

Oh, and by the way if you also happen to be a Michelle Obama fan, NY Mag also has a Michelle Obama Look Book. I know what you might be thinking WHAT THE HELL!!! But believe it or not she did cause quiet a commotion with her revolutionary first lady looks. The African American community (not everyone of course) even criticized her for not wearing her hair the African American way, since I have no clue of what that means, you be the judge.

But before we started filming I also had to go to the network for my weekly style segment SESIONES DE ESTILO featured in the morning show MATUTINO EXPRESS. Needless to say it was one heck of a busy and productive day. When you do what you love it doesn't really matter how long or how much you work, you just do it.

STYLISH LIVING: MY ROOM

Hello guys! It's been a while! Feels good to be back! This time I'm not going to apologize for having abandoned you forever, I've just been busy with other projects that require lots of time and energy from me and quite frankly as much as I would like to think I am, I'm not wonder woman.

Fot this issue of STYLISH LIVING I thought why not make it all about my room. Last week we filmed the introduction to my show AMO MI ESTILO in my room and I got to do one of the many things I like doing best which is creating settings. I liked the results so much I decided to leave my room like that, now it really looks like my own little private vintage boutique with everything hanging all around the place.

My room is an example of how being stylish doesn't really have to be expensive, you just need to be creative. Most of the things that decorate my room belonged to either my father, mother or grandparents. Being surrounded by family treasures makes me feel like I have a piece of history with me. I guess I'm just very proud of my roots and having little remembrances around me proves it.

It might not be your style, and it probably is quite girly although not too much but I hope you like what you see.

This chair belonged to my grandfather. He spent his last days in it. We used to be neighbors and so every afternoon whenever I visited I would find him sitting in his chair, drinking coffee and watching his favorite show.

The pages on the wall are from a book that belonged to my father. The book is called THE PLEASURE OF LIVING. I thought: I'm never gonna read this book, why not paste them to the wall? and so I did.

My grandmother's Secretaire where I sit down to work on the blog and all other projects.

We used to have this chairs in my old house. I asked my mom if I could have them and again she said yes (she's a sweetheart). I had them painted white and re-upholstered, they look soooo much nicer than before.

Books, books and more books, Miu Miu shoes and antique fashion drawings that a friend gave to me when I lived in Switzerland while studying Italian.

Working!

The "Style Bible".

I think my grandmother wore this hat for one of my uncle's wedding.

Antique books, antique jewelry, antique table, all belonged to my grandmother. This table dates back from when my grandparent lived in Malawi in 1937, that's how old the table is (I might be wrong with the dates, it could even be older).

My father's antique Polaroid camera.

My grandmother's antique luggage. The box at the bottom she actually traveled with it in 1947 from London to New York when my grandparents moved from Africa to America. It still has the Queen Mary stamp on it.  Of course you needed your hats. Some day soon I'll share some of this amazing pictures.

Some of my clothes I don't wear anymore but decide to keep it as part of my room decoration. I do wear the MARNI bird coat though.

Another one of my grandmother's hats. If I ever find a picture of her wearing the hats, I'll share them with you.

Ok guys!!! Until next!!! Hopefully soon!!!
